I've read the answers with great interest to the good question posed. I find it very odd that a god had decided the eating pork was a no-no. Its seems to me that most religions have something odd about them and not eating pork is one of them

Could it be, pre-religion, think of how quickly pork can go off in cooler climates, both Judaism & Islam originated in warm climates; also believe me 'off' pork smells like dead humans, a good friend a R.A.M.C .doctor has said, the stench gets every where, both a Bam, Iranian earthquake, and then some where round the sunami, hence it's used to train 'Sniffer dogs'

Hence when living in small extended family groups, if you killed the pig and ate immediatly ok, any delay, human death stench, illness and at that time very probably death. Subsequently this has become part of a religeon that has followed through today.

Similar with dogs,"off pork" Bisto to wild dogs, in warm climates with in a couple of days, wild boar & human remains look & smell very much alike, so who'd know what a 'pet dog' may have been eating. There is also the added fact of rabies transmission, that area the mainly close contact that a primary source of carrier would be dogs, for both nomadic and stationary cultures. Again this from a very primative culture would eventuall become part of a religeon.

Perhaps a Social anthropologist could give you more examples.

Christians eating 'Fish' only on Fridays, caught the weekend before, fish is one of the better meats for preserving over a few days. This would stem from pre-christian times and eventually become part of that religeon.

The simple answer to this question, and to the one raised in the last answer, is that there were very good reasons why pig meat should not be eaten by both Muslims and Jews at the time their respective Holy Books forbade the same. That is because there was no refrigeration. Pig meat deteriorates very quickly in heat and it is very unwise to eat it. That is the reason behind the Jewish ban on mixing meat and milk. Milk can quickly go sour in the heat an affect meat. In fact, in modern commercial kitchens, of whatever faith or none, hygiene regulations require separate preparation areas for different foods to avoid cross contamination.

So far as pig meat is concerned, I live in the UK and have eaten it all my, relatively, long life. I have never suffered any ill effects.

Muslims & jews avoid pork due to their religion. Very similar in many ways to chrisian old testament if you want to check it out. In the bible. Animals are divided into "clean" (edible) and "unclean" (forbidden) by the type of hoof they have. Pigs have a split hoof and are considered unclean whilst other animals with a whole or single hoof are considered edible. Also the pig is used as a host animal by the tapeworm which was untreatable many years ago so this religious rule had health benefits. As a buddhist none of this affects me but hey, differences make life interesting. As for the dog thing dont worry your pretty little brain!!!!!!!!!

Both Muslims and Jews do not eat pork. Consider when this was dictated. In the Jewish texts (the Torah) pork is not to be eaten bacause it is not Kosher. In the Muslim texts (the Koran) it does not appear to say:

In each case, the rules for what is and is not allowed appears to have been influenced by the fact that their are a high degree of bacteria in pork, which is why it is so important that it be thoroughly cooked. As a way of saving their faithful from this problem, pork was deemed to be unclean.

I live in Dubai in the Middle East. I'm and English Ex pat and I've been in Dubai for 9 years... Islam has 5 pillars of their faith and and not eating pork is one of them... Jews also have the same belief... They see pork as tainted meat... Long Long ago pigs where fed on allsorts of hideous stuff like bodys and human excement... So it became 1 of the 5 pillars of Islams faith... Phrophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) would have translated the the 5 pillars of islam from Allah (god) and then it later became the Holy Koran (Bible)... As for dogs... This goes for all animals actually... Muslims believe that animals should be outside and not inside... Some also see them as unclean. Islam is a very clean faith... IE they will wash 7 times before pray...

Both the Bible and Quran prohibit the eating of pork. Muslims are aware of this prohibition and observe it strictly.God declares the pig to be unclean for believers and issues a stern warning against those who eat pork. In addition, they like to be clean.
