In the time of Queen Anne, England was still very much an agricultural country so people basically lived off the land, either by growing their own vegetables etc and keeping cows, goats, chickens etc.People living in the country, therefore tended to be better off than the poor who lived in towns, whose situation was much worse. Domestic Service was a way out poverty for some because they, at least, had a roof over their heads, however uncomfortable their accommodation. They were also provided with food. Why don't you imagine yourself as a farmer's child or as a servant in a large household?
