We moved house a couple of months ago and there are two toilets up and downstairs, the toilet seats don't sit properly and wobble and also when lads go to the toilet the toilet seat keeps dropping down on them when they lift it up...any ideas what i can do to stop this? Are there different size toilet seats?

1. The seats are wobbly because they are not tightly fastened to the toilet (porcelain) fixtures. Tighten the bolts to the nuts sufficiently until the seats are solidly set. But read the explanation below first before you tighten the bolts.

2. The lids keep dropping down because the seats are set to far back (towards the tanks). The slots on the fixture for the bolts to go through have enough room for the necessary adjustment. The lid/seat assemblies should be set far enough forward so that when the lids are in the up position, they tilt slightly back against the tanks at and angle to the vertical. They cannot drop onto the seats in that position by themselves.

The seats may be sized wrong for the toilets. There are a few different shapes and sizes on the market.
Take a picture and measurements. Try a plumbing shop or a good hardware store that has knowledgable sales clerks. They can help. Big box stores offer good prices, however most of their employees are not trained properly to help.

I always replace toilet seats when I move into a new apartment. There are different sizes of seats. Take yours with you when you go to the store to make sure that you get the right size.

Try adjusting the fixing screws.

Crouch down and look on the underside of the pan at the back. You'll see a long threaded bolt and a fixing nut and washer on each side of the toilet. Loosen them and take the toilet seat off.

Look on the underside of the fixing bracket and you'll see that the threaded bolt screws in to the fixing bracket via one of 3 holes. These holes allow you to fit the seat onto toilets of different sizes.

Before you change the fixing hole by which the bracket is fixed, try fitting the seat back onto the toilet and adjust the alignment of the seat so that the front edge of the seat is aligned to the front end of the pan, with just a little overlap. Tighten the bolts under the pan and see if that works.

all toilets are different sizes nowdays.its not like it used to be where you could go and buy a seat and it would fit no problem.if you know the make and model of your toilet then if its not too old you should be able to get a new one no problem.just walking into a bathroom shop and asking for a new seat will get you nowhere.
i work in bathroom retail and i actually turn people away now cos they buy seats and dont check then bring them back try another and that dont work etc etc etc. its a waste of time for both parties in the end.
check the make and model and take it from there.

good luk

It sounds like you may have the wrong type seat for your toilets. They are either round or elongated. Check your toilet size (measurements if needed) and then buy new ones from the local hardware store. Know the color of your toilet too (almond, white, etc). Good Luck!

'K' probably has the solution. I will add that some fittings have a single off-set screw hole so that the position of the seat may be adjusted by slackening the back nut and hinge securing screw and rotating the hinge plate. This type is identified by having a screw that is visible from above.

firstly anyone who buys a new house should change the toilet seat and fit your own new ones.
thats my motto.
also the fittings need adjusting or replacing .
buying a new seat with fittings should do it.

if the seats are in good condition and you like them then go to your nearest independent plumbers merchant and ask for cranked seat hinges, they throw the seat slightly forward about 1/2" AND THEREFORE ALLOWS THE SEAT TO STAND UP>
IF YOU GET A BLANK STARE WHEN YOU ASK FOR THE CRANKED SEAT HINGES THEN GO TO ANOTHER INDEPENDENT MERCHANT>
SORRY ABOUT THE TEXT CAPS LOCK STUCK
HOPE THIS HELPS
