They teach lessons about humanity. Man is a scary thing. More or less the unknown is generally frightening...the abyss, the dark, what not.
Now, if the abyss is scary, what is scarier, what generates it, what you will find in it, or what comes from it? The answer is the story - at least the author's interpretation of the fear...

Hmm, maybe you should try the goode olde Gothic novels for a thril - like The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen or Dr. Moreau's Island by Wells, those are the stuff our nightmares are made of. Really, Frankenstein is still scary - cuttting off body parts from dead people, stitching them together and pretending that the mess you made is a human being.... And what about hansel and Gretel, those two kids cook a person alive (be she the witch). All these stories appeal to our visceral instincts - that part of our mental processes that deal with disgust, nausea and repulsion. And that will always work, trust me.

Back in the day, when there was absolutely nothing shocking in the world. Everyone lived a timid and pure life..these movies really SHOCKED everyone. And they were all like "Oh My Heavens!" lol
The thought of a man turning into a hairy wolf or the though of a vampire drinking your blood was a real head turner back in those days! They appreciated every little bit of time they got to go to the movies, cause not many people could really afford such luxuries for entertainment.
Nowdays nobody really appreciates movies because they are used to the convenience of modern day life and nobody ever gets shocked and can appreciate the classic movies because nowdays movies are so bloody and filled with gore. I think we have all become numb to things that are supposed to shock us.

Because in our time, everything about our world is scary. We don't have to open a book or go to a theater to see something that will shock us. We can turn on CNN.

When they were brand new, it was scary. Nobody had ever seen creepy effects on the big screen before. Now you can see it everyday and still think it is tame... and lame.
