Did its full title appear on billboards and boxes? It seems somewhat excessive...

I suspect that this is a malicious amendment, which wasn't checked by the IMDb database manager. (I applied for a job as one of these with them years ago - I didn't get it.)

OTOH, it could be correct - never underestimate the stupidity of film company executives, as they say, and don't forget that "The Madness of King George" had to be renamed from the play's title of "The Madness of George III", because Americans wouldn't know that George was a King and also think they had missed the first two films! To be fair, in Japan, "Dr. No" nearly got translated as "We Don't Need a Doctor"!

It says the US 'working title' was "The Strange Mr. Ripley". The other sounds excessive to the point of stupidity, you'd never get it all on a poster.

I don't think that the full title appeared on billboards. I think it was just advertised as the talented mr Ripley

When I saw it at the theater it was just called The Talented Mr. Ripley. That's what it said on the ticket, posters, marquee and ads.

I never saw that title anywhere.

Take most of what you read at IMDB with a grain of salt since anyone can update it and it isn't moderated.
