It is quite safe to shop online depending where you are doing your online shopping. Common advice for online shopping:
1. Shop from well-known, credible websites. Most of these websites have accreditations with some form of consumer trust association depending on the country.
2. Even if you are shopping on a less well-known website, you just need to be a little extra careful when you make a online payment with your credit card. Most websites would use a secured shopping cart & payment processing. You should be able to locate a tiny lock icon either at the bottom right of your IE6 or at the top next to the URL box for IE7. You can also check that at minimum the shopping cart & payment URLs should start with a "https://" to ensure that the transmission is secure.
3. With just a little extra vigilance, you can have a great time and convenience shopping online. Just make sure you don't bust your credit.

Yes, it is very safe to shop online. However there are things to remember.. when paying by your card make sure in the address bar the address begins with 'https://' and you should also see a padlock, at the botton of the screen if you use IE6, at the top next to the address bar if you use IE7 and the bar should turn yellow if you use Firefox. The padlock and and the https:// let the user know the page will be sent using secure encryption so know one will be able to view the information you are sending. You should be safe if you make sure you follow what I said, although, if a site looks 'dodgy' then find a site that you trust.

Depends!
Mostly it's safe but you can get rogue companies and incompetent companies.
I once bought from a company that then used my credit card details to pay for their web hosting. Turns out what they were selling was counterfeit as well.
But I got my money back from the credit card company and got their website taken off air by their provider who was not happy to have been paid by stolen card details. It only cost me hassle.
Some companies have had their customer lists and stored credit card details stolen (or just lost them... thanks Na*****de), but if you use a credit card to pay then you are covered by the card company. It only costs you hassle.
I've had some great bargains online... so it's worth it IMHO. Its not much more risky than using a card in a shop to pay for something... as long as you stick to businesses that have been around for a while.

If you check the website address it should read HTTPS meaning it's a secure site then you should be safe to shop that site. without it I would be very leery of it
The second thing to check for .. is there a little padlock at the bottom? if it is open then it is not a secure site. if it is closed then it is a secure site
