Yes Sharm in standard Arabic means a Crack or a Split, and it could mean a Crack in a Mountain sometimes as mentioned. But in our case, "Sharm" of sea is the Split of land into two coasts, and the region between them is called "Sharm"..which is the same as "Bay" in english.

I think it means coast like one of the answeres said, I don't know that for sure . But what I know for sure anyway is the fact that even Egyptians don't know what it means.
