DVD+R is a dvd disc that allows multiple layers for one disc where as dvd-r only allows one layer. They will not compete to become the de Facto standard, because they are both here to stay. Multi layer DVD+R can allow extra capacity per disc than DVD-R hence its high cost!

DVD-R are an older format but can be played on most players anyway Search On yahoo This question and there are loads of websites that can answer in detail because i asked a few weeks ago after buying dvd+r's

Dvd+r are good for backing up files
Dvd-r are good for video playback etc.
