...but the masses seem to have no concrete power in way things are going in our society...what can ordinary citizens do to contribute to the betterment of the world and the society?

Little or nothing as individuals. En mass they can make any changes they please, especially in a democracy.

It takes one person to create a dream, foster an idea, pursue a cause. Reflect upon the individuals who have made a difference in our world, those who stood up for what they believed and followed their convictions no matter what obstacle was placed in their way. People like Jesus, Martin Luther King Jr, Edison, Copernicus, Galileo, Columbus, Edith Cowan, Florence Nightingale etc. People can and do change the world every day. It can begin by simply treating your neighbour as you expect to be treated then pass it forward.
