Generally there's 3 brands that most good runners swear by.
Ascics, Mizuno and new balance.
I don't run great distances but run often enouhg I need good quality running shoes because my feet are faced seriously outward which means that I need decent shoes or suffer aching feet or twist my feet during running. Believe me when I say that I've tried every brand Adidas, Nike, Reebok,...
None seemed to help. One day one of my friends who does marathons taught me to go shopping amon the 3 brands I mentioned. Over the last few years I've had both New Balance and Asics and not had any more problems. I have no experience mizuno but they're supposed to be equally good. I'm particularly fond of New Balance as the first pair I had lasted for over 2 years before the soles were worn out. But since they are harder to come by where I live I've had Ascics since then.
Best advice I can give you however is to go into a good sports store if possible a specialised one for running and have your feet measured. They'll get you the pair that fit you like a glove and take your eventual disfunctions into account.

If you go into any Sports store they will be able to help you with the type of running shoe that best suits your needs. If you are going to be using them for the gym and running on different terrains you are better off going for a cross-trainer. The label is not important as long as there is good support.

But the people in your local sports store go through training every time a new type of footwear is brought out so you are better off going to them and explaining exactly what it is you intend to use the runners for. Just so you know Nike tend to be small fitting!

Proper running shoes - for the surface you intend running on. Not normal trainers though.

I trained for a 1/2 marathon a while back and went to a local running centre. They watched me run - I'm an over-pronator - and suggested a few styles which would suit me and the road running/off road running I was doing. It's horses for courses.

I have always used Mizuno since then, cause they are cheap, comfy and dry quickly in the winter months.

Your answer is like a piece of string -depends on the activity, how much you are prepared to pay and the shape of your foot -is it wide or thin -is the sole flat or do you have a large instep. How do you strike the ground when running. Are you running on the road, cross country.......
to answer your question you need to have several scenario and then cross reference your scores for each, alternatively set up your own experiment and choose a specific shoe for a specific event!

The only way to find out is to visit a running shop with one of those treadmills, and go on it.The staff will then show you which is the best shoe for you.

My podiatrist recommended Asics. I was always a Nike girl before. I just didn't like the look of the Asics. But the doctor was right. These shoes really feel good.

when you run you should never wear flat shoes as this hurts your achilles tenden and puts it under enormus strain and can cause problems for walking. generally wear a trainer with a soft and cushioned heel that puts virtually no pressure on the tenden. you need a shoe that fits though and you find comfortable.

Skin. Rips and tears but grows back! I wouldn't even consider these shoes... more like God-given gifts.
