Most people always wonder why their computer seems to be running slow. They forget, that like a car, a computer also needs maintenance. There are certain steps you can take, to ensure a faster running and more efficient computer operation. This article assumes you are running Microsoft Windows.

Steps
Update your Operating System regularly to ensure that the operating system (OS) is updated with the latest security patches. To check whether you have the latest update, click on the Start Menu->All Programs and select the Windows Update icon.

Have an updated anti-virus software running on your system. Make sure that the anti-virus software is updated frequently (sometimes even daily if need be) with fixes to the actual engine and to the database files that contain the latest cures against new viruses, worms and Trojans. Use spywares detection tools (Spybot, AdAware) once in a while, since not all spywares are detected by anti-virus softwares.

Know what is running on your computer as this will increase your ability to identify potential harmful processes. Call up the Windows Task Manager (press CTRL+ALT+DEL) and familiarize yourself with the processes running at any point in time. Use the "msconfig" tool to check which programs are starting at the boot time. Some common tools (Acrobat Reader, HP printer driver, Java scheduler) have a nasty habit to "call home" and check for updates. You can uncheck those programs in the right-most tab of the "msconfig" tool.

Cleanup your tool bar, by removing unnecessary software from running all the time. Every thing on your taskbar runs constantly, slowing down the computer.

Install firewall software or use the Windows firewall. To activate your Windows Firewall click on your control panel and select Windows Firewall. Switch the firewall on by ticking the "On" radio button.

Do a complete maintenance on your computer, at least once a month. This includes a Disk Defrag. Click on start->accessories->system tools->disk cleanup->disk defrag,

There are more than one ways to speed up your computer:

1. Data defragmentation.
2. Adding up extra RAM
3. Clearing HARDDISK of unwanted data.
4. Upgrading the motherboard or the entire PC.

If it's a desktop:

1) More memory - less waiting for disk when you swap programs
2) Faster hard disk - faster supply of data when you want it
3) Processor upgrade - just do it all faster
4) Overclock it - just do it all faster at risk of frying your processor
5) Registry clean it - clean out the old cr*p
6) Reinstall everything - start from scratch and clean all the cr*p.
7) Defragment the hard disk - arrange the data for faster access.
8) Mend it all with a new one.

For a laptop you can't generally do 3 or 4 but you can do the rest.

Run disk Cleanup: Using windows XP you can :

Click Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance>Free up space on hard disk

Defrag harddrive
Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster

Those are both free.

You can also buy more RAM get a better graphics card or better CPU, but those cost money.
