An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

The other end may be slow. Use ping utility to check the quality of your connection. Run the following command: "ping yahoo.com" to see the statistics for connection with yahoo. Packet loss should be 0% and average timing should be less than 500ms. Then you can try a download and see the rate shown by your browser.

Your computer may be running fast, but your connection to the site you're viewing may not be.
Your can run speed tests at places like "pcpitstop.com", but keep in mind that, if you are visiting a complex, or busy, site, it will take time to transfer data - something over which you have no control.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ is the best speed test I've found. It's one of the few that will test your bandwidth up and down.
There's not much you can do to boost your speed in most cases aside from siging up for a faster connection.

there is a very good chance that ur ISP provides the method on its site itself. you can search for it in ite website. my ISP does it in a really simple way.
there is a shortcut for it on the very first screen named "test your broadband connection speed". and mind it is almost always near to its claimed speed.

I like using http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
from CNET its been around for years and gives you a fairly accurate depiction of yourbroadband speed. One thing to remember is that is you sign up for 6MB DSL service it is not guarenteed to be 6MB. Its guarenteed to be UP to 6MB not always at 6MB.
