My guess is that greed comes from desire. Desire is just an impulse to want something and it is totally o.k. to feel it. Greed on the other hand is the activity to get what you desire. some people are so greedy that they would do anything to still their desire. Desires, in fact, are infinite, therefore greed can become infinite as well. If a person can not accept his desires as being just an impulse and has always to still the desires at all costs, they totally loose their perspective on things. These people are not even thinking about life and dead, they are only searching for ways to still their desires. You can also call these people ignorant, because they don't understand the difference between desire and greed and think it is the same thing.

THE QUESTION IS GREAT INDEED.
IN THE GREAT EPIC MAHABHARATA YAKSHA ASKED YUDDHISTIRA THAT WHAT IS MOST WONDER OF THE WORLD? HE ANSWERED THAT EVERYONE KNOW THAT HE MAY FACE DEATH ANY MOMENT BUT STILL ARE CRUEL.
IGNORANCE AND BODYKNOWLEDGE (CALLED DEHABUDDHI IN HINDI) ARE THE ROOT CAUSE TO IT. IN SOME OF THE CASES ONLY PEOPLE ARE FOUND GREEDY DUE TO THEIR FAULT BUT IN MOST OF CASES THEY ARE FOUND GREEDY DUE TO PRESSURE IMPOSED ON THEM BY THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. THE FAMILY MEMBERS PUT PRESSURE ON SUCH PEOPLE HENCE MAKING THEM GREEDY.
