he is in pain and has been doing hard pebbly poos. I have just changed his formula as the last one did not agree with him. He is better now, just constipated.

A common treatment used by parents is adding Karo syrup or other light or dark corn syrups to their infant's bottles of formula. While this is often discouraged because of the theoretical risk of botulism, the AAP reports that it is safe to do. If giving formula, changing to a soy formula can also be helpful.
I can't remember the dosage to put in the formula though. Call your doctor's nurse, she should be able to tell you.
Work his legs, help "move" the poop in the colon.
I worked in Peds, the docs wouldn't suggest changing formulas too often, this just confuses the belly as well.
Hope this helps

My son was constipated also not to long after he came home from the hospital. We used a laxative for infants and also added some dark Karo syrup to his bottle. Just a little. That is a old remedy that my grandmother told me about. It worked though.

A drop of Karo won't hurt my doctor recommended it and so did the WIC office and its the only thing i have found that worked. Its an old remedy but a good one also give plenty of fluids and massage the belly to relive gas pain you can lay the baby across your legs on tummy while supporting his head and just lightly bounce it seems to sooth them

My baby had the same problem when she was a newborn. DO NOT GIVE HER KARO SYRUP. My doctor highly opposed this. She said to give her an ounce of apple juice diluted with an ounce of water. He doesnt have to drink it all, just a little. The fiber in it will make him go. dont give him too much, as my babysitter did, now mine has the runs.

Try kero syrup not much just a little, you can go to the store and buy infant suppositories, when he is trying to poop push his legs back to his chest that may help ease it out a little. If none of that works then take him to the dr. You may have to change his formula.

Try adding a tsp. of Kero (not sure of the spelling) syrup to an 8 oz. bottle. I tried this when my kids were infants and it releived them of constipation.

My baby was constipated to and the doctor told me to use glycerin suppositories or give her some apple, pear, or prune juice but if you use that then make sure you use more water than juice. But I would call your pediatrician and ask him.

I am in Australia, so I am not sure if I can help, but we have a safe laxative for babies, so maybe you could go to your local drug store and they might have a syrup that they could offer. My little one had a similar problem.
