Words common to English and Dutch mostly have the same consonants, so the Dutch for "street" is "straat." In German many consonants in words of common origin are changed according to a pattern called Grimms' Law after the fairy story collectors. T in English and Dutch becomes Z at the beginning of a word in German, ss (or ß) in the middle of a word, so "street" becomes "Straße", also spelled "strasse". English dam (an earthen mound to hold water back) is the same in Dutch but has two Ms in German, and the plural is Dämme. Ergo, "Dämmestrasse" would be German for the street of the dams, not "bridgestreet" which would be Brugstraat in Dutch and Brückestrasse in German.

STRASSE is the simply the German word for STREET or ROAD. For example, Beethoven Strasse in German = Beethoven Street in English. Below are a few translation sites that might be helpful to you. Good luck!

NO If you saw it in amsterdam, netherlands, it would have been "straat" not "Strasse". A lot of dutch understand or even speak german, but it's not our national or native language (except in stupid american movies ). Damme is not an adjective in dutch or german. Damme straat/Strasse doesn't make any sense. You probably saw a "damstraat" the 10 points should go to Laurence

Strasse or Straße is the german word for street. It is usual in the german adreesses to see this word as abreviation as for example:

Mozart Strasse = Mozartstr. = the "str" at the end means Strasse
