i quit ballet 4 years ago and yesterday i had a ballet class for 2 hours. when i was dancing, i was suprised how much things i could do and how much i could stretch. i did not feel any pain at all during the class. however, when i woke up today i felt clear pain in my calves. my calves felt stiff and sore. anyway, i went shopping with a friend and walked home (30 minute walk) which i seldomly do. when i came home, i felt noticiblesharper and stiffer pain in my calves. its very uncomfortable for me to walk now. so im wondering what do you guys think happened and should i take the dance class tommorrow? i would feel really bad telling the teacher i have to skip the 2nd class because i hurt my calves.

Don't skip. I have done ballet for a few years and sometimes my calves feel like that too. Actually it's just a sign that you've worked really hard and your muscles just aren't used to it. It goes away. Tomorrow just tell your teacher that your calves are hurting(if they still are) and you might not be able to dance very well. Don't worry, it's a good thing.

Don't listen to those people who say to go to class!!! Your muscles are obviously in a great deal of pain. Even stretching it isn't good. Of course when you take a 2 hour ballet class and walk you'll be sore! It's only normal. Just tell the teacher you're in a lot of pain. She should understand; sitting out once isn't bad, compared to sitting out forever because you pushed yourself too hard. I guess if you're teacher's strict, offer to join the class, but I would tell her how much pain you're in. Maybe say, "Hi ____. I must've really had a workout during the last class, because my calves are really sore. It's been hurting a lot lately. [Describe the pain.] I can try to do the class today, but I don't want to damage my muscles more. Are there modifications to some of the movements that I can do?"

That's just sore muscles. Happens all the time, if you haven't worked them in a while and then all of a sudden you gave them a lot of work. Yes, it is common for them to get even more sore in the evening of the next day, or even the day after.

What to do to make the problem go away sooner: Drink plenty of water. Soak them in hot tub. You need the blood flow to carry away that lactic acid that had formed in your muscles (that's what is causing the pain).Get some Advil or Aspirin if it gets pretty annoying.

As for the class tomorrow - don't skip it unless it is untolerable. More exersice will help, and also it will help to get your muscles back into shape.

You do not need to tell the dance teacher that you need to skip dance class tommorow. You need to either a nice hot bath or shower "not to hot". Your calves are going to feel like that after dance class every now and then. Yesterday was probably your first dance class back so it was going to happen. You did not hurt yourself, you just worked really hard. Good Job! Have fun in dance class today.

Don't skip the class, but take it easy and tell you teacher why you may not be working at 100% Teachers would rather have someone take it easy for a class or two than to have someone out for weeks with torn muscles, tendons or ligaments.....For pain take some Tylenol or Aleve, take a bath and massage your calves. You just restarted dance, so you are going to be sore for awhile....Good Luck

That's just routine soreness of muscles that haven't been worked in a while. If you skip class, they're going to continue hurting. The best way to help them stop hurting is to drink plenty of water (keeps the toxins that cause the soreness flushed out) and continue exercising the muscles.

Don't miss out in class, attendence it very important. And if you stop dancing for a while and start again suddenly it is natural for your muscles to hurt, because youre not used to it. You problemy just over stretched a muscle a little to far. take it easy . Eventually you'll get used to it and it won't hurt any more. Its just how your body reacts to things it isn't used to.

You need to stretch your calves several times today and they should feel better. If you have to cancel ask the teacher about stretches.

Dont skip. Babying the muscle will just make it tense even further. You gotta keep working it to loosen it, what I do is if I'm sitting I point then flex my leg so that way its still active without being abused. Good luck!!
