Atlantic depressions are the main reason for this. Polar air masses merge with north atlantic trade winds (warm air) and "cyclongenesis" caused by the coriolis effect (earth's spinning) results in vorticity of the system. The pressure gradient (where pressure varies from 1020mb round the edges to 950 ~ 960mb in the trough) results in tightly packed isobars and heavy winds. (Isobars represent contours on gradients). The frequency and severity of atlantic depressions increases greatly in the winter over the UK, making it seem overly windy and stormy.

It is not only in UK. Here in France, we also see this phenomenon for some months now !! i thinks the world weather pattern is changing, fast.
To understand more we must recall ourselves that earth meteo weather system is a huge non-linear system.(work of Lorentz, and chaos theory)
It was in equilibrium before egoistic people burn mindlessly the carbon and oil, destroyed the best weather regulator know to man: THE TREES !Its natural, efficient but some human have no respect for life starting with their own !
I'm afraid it is bad news or good news(it depends the point of view) for nature taking back it right. This goes with melting of ice, at high rate(ask any climber or mountain people !) in Alps.
greetings

The tornado has not something to do with whats going contained in the united kingdom. The Atlantic is warmth and the air is chillier then time-honored. warm air rises/clashes with chilly air, which creates winds. because the united kingdom is smack contained in the midst of the sea, it receives winds from all aspects (north, south, east, west).

The Government would have you believe that this is the effect of Global Warming. What utter tosh!
I have a freind in Oregon USA and they have snow EVERY year without fail. So do all the skiing resorts in Europe. In Egypt, it is always sunny and hot and likewise in the Med'.
GW is rubbish. It's just winter in Britain, that's all.

They are not. They might appear that way to you today but it's just the way the alternating high and low pressure systems are operating.
What about typhoons, hurricanes, tornadoes, the Roaring Forties? Where would you say they are?
