Plastics are lighter than steel and other materials that they replace, and lower vehicle weight significantly reduces fuel consumption.
Plastics have superior formability. This enables a function to be essentially produced in a single manufacturing process (e.g. injection moulding) rather than combining separate components in a more complex process. This reduces total production cost for vehicle manufacturers.
Plastic components are an important way for manufacturers to differentiate products in a market where price and quality are increasingly uniform.
Injection moulding tools cost less than the tools used to manufacture components in metals, thus reducing unit cost.
Plastics work well in the vehicle’s deformation zones, which should give way and absorb impact in a collision.
Plastics are easily combined with other materials.
Plastics have better sound absorption than steel and sheet metal.

Plastics in packaging: light weight, environmentally friendly, relatively low cost. Only 4% of oil is used in packaging. Once the packaging has outlived its useful life (don't forget re-use of check-out bags as kitchen bin liners, etc.) it can be incinerated with energy recovery. All you've then done is "borrow" the oil to make something useful and then you do the same as you do with the rest of it - burn it to heat houses, run cars and make electricity.

Cheap, Easily moulded in to specific shapes, different plastics can have different properties, plastics are lightweight they don't conduct electricity so are good for insulators,

Whatever advantages there may be will soon be of academic interest only when the oil (from which they are made) runs out.
