Yes they do work from the mains. I've never heard of an electric shower not working with a combi because its completely independant from the boiler. The only problem you may have is when using the shower it may rob the pressure needed to spark the boiler for hot water in which case you cant use both together. Its some cartridge type showers that cannot be used with a combi. If you get the shower from a plumbers merchants ask at the time of purchase of go to the manufacturers website and ask their technical dept xxxx

You can install an electric shower, there will be no more of a problem with a combi than with a mains tap. The shower has to be fed from the cold main. Personally I would be inclined to put in a thermostatic shower valve fed from the combi, you will get a much better flow rate than from an electric unit. Use a good valve, Mira or Hansgrohe designed for combi supply.

Electric showers are NOT mains fed, they come from the tank in your attic/hotpress ,there is a pump inside them which drives the water ,they are not using gravity to push the water so the combi will have nothing to do with them ,if you install a pump shower ,thats a differant story altogether, but the combi still wont effect this system but you may have to install a pump in your hot press. The answer to your question is Yes.
