I'm not Japanese but I have a HUGE interest in Japan and am actually in the process of learning the language. Here are the links I've used. They're pretty good and simple to understand but I suggest you read the Wikipedia articles because they really go in depth.
The bottom site is a pay site but if you have a webcam and a headset with a mouthpiece you can actually learn there and speak with people.
Gambatte! (good luck)

The computer program, Rosetta. Is a great program. I learned Japanese that way. It's expensive though!
For something cheaper, Japanese For Busy People. It's what I used in the class I took.
Definitely a difficult language!
Good luck to you!

I would highly recommend taking a Japanese language class at your local community college. In a classroom setting you get a chance to converse with others as well as make new friends. Go give it a try!
