i find that if i go with the usual route of introducing myself by stating my name and all those bland details (where i'm from/what i do/how many siblings) only creates more tension and akwardness, and the conversation just seems to go downhill from there.

when approaching a total stranger (not to pick them up) what's the best way to ensure your first conversation goes well, and not uncomfortable or akward?

I'm the kind of person who will just say hi, I'm Kat, then start talking about whats going on. Like say at a book store " I see you like fantasy novels, have you ever read any R. A. Salvatore books or something like that. Just casual chat about nothing. I may not leave with anything but gratitude, but it was polite conversation at the time. Always remember to be polite, and don't give to much information about yourself.
