opportunities, I wouldn't necessarily say I was happy living here, what with terrorism, etc, etc. I was recently burgled (a week before Xmas) and they took everything. My uncle up in the North said, "You want to get away from down there and come up and live here". The thing is I worry I won't have the same job opportunites and although it might be 'safer' up where he is (Newcastle), I do wonder if it's a right or wrong decision. Will northerners will accept me? I don't know what to do. I just seem to go from one crisis to the other living in London and would a move like that be good? I know you don't know me, but just a few hinters would be great. Thanks.

What kind of job are you looking for?

newcastle is a big enough placce, getting a job shouldnt be too hard.

Sounds like a new start could be just what the Dr ordered

Do yourself a favor. Get a piece of paper and make 4 columns. Write 'London' over the top of the first two and in one column list all the reasons why you might want to stay and in the other list all the reasons you might want to leave. Write 'Newcastle' over the other two columns and in one list the things you think you'll like or think will be better about Newcastle and in the write the things that you won't like or think will be worse. Compare the two lists and see which is more compelling.

The other thing you should do before discounting Newcastle is actually check out the job market. You may be surprised. While it's quite possible you won't make as much money, it's also likely the cost of living is lower.

I'm not from England so I have no idea how the northerners might look at you, but if it's anything like the US it should be the least of your worries.

Now one other thing to consider. About 18 months ago I moved to a totally new community for work. While the job and pay are great, I didn't know anyone in the community. Add to that it's a small town with very little in the way of shopping opportunities and very little social life. I'm finding that while the job is great the other areas of my life are miserable.

Well, after a burglary, its easy to think 'I'll never feel safe in the flat/house again. I'll have to move.' But if you think about it, thats just a gut reaction. If you moved to an identical place in a similar area, your risk of being burgled would statistically be exactly the same, its just that emotionally, you feel its a new place that hasn't been 'violated'.

As far as Newcastle goes, everyone says the people are really friendly, but the city centre on a Friday or Saturday night is full of 18-25 year olds drinking bacardi breezers until fights break out over taxis. Its a modern city now and I think the job opportunities are okay. I wouldn't have thought they'de reject you for being from down-south.

well Poopsy maybe you should move to another country if that is possible, of course being new in an unfamilar place, well all that goes with that, but you could try the southwest united states, of course there is crime, but not on the scale of a large city like new york or LOndon, but yes, i would make the move, and let the job go, you know, when you look at the sacrifices you have to make, is it worth the time and effort and all that anxiety, so the money is good, and the security,of a job is good, but do you have peace of mind, move to the north try it, take a lesser job, or whatever, life is good, and something will come, but i am not forcing a decision here, you are right, i do not know you, so the best of luck and God bless

London may have good job opportunities but there is also a lot more competition for those good jobs!! if your not happy living there then you should definitley move. The doesn't have to be up north as there are places in the south that aren't london. If your worried about jobs up North then don't be. There are lots of cities (manchester, newcastle, leeds) that have great job opportunities. You will have a better quality of life if you move out of london. it may be that city living isnt for you and if so you could relocate to somewhere on the outskirts of a city and still be in easy reach of the city itself for jobs etc. I live near newcastle and there are definitley lots of opportunities for career progression. Good luck with whatever you decide! Oh and with regards to northerners accepting you.....of course they would. It is very friendly up here. I think in London people are more about just looking out for themselves!! :)

I'm originally from Essex and I moved to Leeds 10 years ago,
I can honestly say that there is so much trouble up North, Newcastle has one of the worst rates of crime.
As for Northern men, they are horrible and so two-faced,
We have higher standards down South, and everything is slower up North to the point of annoyance,
Don't get me wrong, Leeds is a cool city,
I had so much trouble from other people up there, I was told I was posh and thought I was better than them,
Northerners do not like Southerners or 'cockneys' as they call us, even if you come from Brighton, they still call you a cockney

I now live in Harlow and I'm very happy and settled,
Have you considered moving to the outskirts of London ???

The thing is even if you do move to Newcastle you will face the same if not more problems as you do in London. At least if you stay where you are you know that you have got great job prospects,You can boost your home security,As for the terrorism,That is a all over the world problem,You have all your friends in London,There is the cost of moving. If i was you i think that i would stay put!!!

Don`t move up north, I`ve lived there and all i wanted to do all the time I was there was to get back to Southern England. I work in Central London and have found that commuting in from outside is easy. I have lived in Bishops Stortford and commuting is like 30 to 40 minutes into Liverpool Street station. I now live on the Sussex coast, so it takes somewhat longer. The quality of life is so much better, by living outside of London and yet you can have the best of both worlds by not being too far away the benefits are still there, as if you were still living there.

Although I don't know London, but maybe go stay with your uncle for awhile before making a decision, safer isn't always better. You're right about there being more job opportunities as well as other things in the city.

I have lived in London all my life so I am used to the dangers - its easy to avoid them if you are careful. London is a great place to live - a global city with a great buzz

Having said that I am getting a bit pissed of with the crappy transport system, the pollution and the stress. I plan to move abroad to somewhere with a healthier lifestyle - maybe Portugal.

I can fly back to London and visit my Friends and family and go shopping from Portugal in a couple of hours so I get the best of both worlds.

I think youve been a tad unlucky as i have friends and family in London and they seem ok.... You dont even have to go up north to newcastle to feel safer if your worried about terrorism in the capital, just move a bit further outside the city. I live in hampshire and it seems safe to me.
