I am a victim of it as well. Throughout my life, my name has been butchered by misspelling and mispronunciation. In a couple of cases, I have even been mistaken for a boy when applying for things through the mail.
I would not give my child a popular, overused, or trendy name, but I would stick with one that is easy to spell and pronounce. I prefer old-fashioned, traditional names, and ones which readily lend themselves to normal nicknames. (I never had a nickname because it's almost impossible to construct one from my real name.)

Ask your self this question - Would it pass the "playground test?"
Unfortunately, kids can be cruel to other kids, especially those that are "different" in some way. Think back. Kids that have freckles, or kids that are short, or fat, or tall, or ugly, or you fill in the blank. Unique names (or even unique spellings) can lead to the same taunting and lead to feelings of inferiority or low self-esteem. Some kids can handle it, some kids can't. Of course, in some cases unique names are OK, but why risk it. Parents should good sense and explore the baby name sites on the Internet with caution. What may be vogue or cute today, may look silly 20 years from now. At that time, the kids and their friends may have accepted the "unique" names, but they'll think that the parents were freaks!

Some names are really nice and unique, but then you get some that are really embarassing. I would give my child a non traditional and unique name, but a name that would be accepted and not critized. My parents gave me a horrible name(Not Jade) and I hate it and I'm thinking of changing it too. I would never want my kids to go through the teasing and mocking of a weird name, although I wouldn't want my kids to have a name that almost everyone has.

It is quite hard to know what a unique name is these days with all the Phoenix Chi and Madonna Bluebell girls and Tiger, Red and Superman (I kid you not) boys. I think some parents make life long fools out of their children, which can't be good. Some kids will relish standing out because of their name, I imagine Peaches Geldof is one of those, but others of a more introvert manner, would hate it. I don't really think parents should think it their right to create an identity before a child has even discovered themselves. Choose a mad middle name and allow them to go by that if they wish.

i like unique names i think that they are great as long as they arent going to get a kid made fun of why not... i mean i would rather have a name different from other ppls just show that i am an individual. But unfortunatly i was given a verry common name... there were four other ppl in my graduating class with my name!!! and there were only 150 of us

My daughter has a unique name. I have a very common name, and got sick of having 500 people in a class with my name. That's why I picked something really off beat.

i stuck with family names for my two boys which they are both very happy with...but I dream of the day when i might have grandchildren and suggest something with a twist, more creative. i could look at names for girls all day!
but alas, if my 'inlaw suggestions' fall to the wayside, i'm going to use all my grandmotherly charms to try to win over a shot at the great-grandkids names. isn't that horrible? i can hardly wait! :)
ps. hmmm....Cinnamon? 'Nana, can we go shopping?' 'Why yes we can, Cinnamon!' Yes, that's a nice name too! Kudos to you!

Cinnamon, Ginger, and other unique names seem okay, because they are easily pronounced.
I know someone named Leila. She has to constantly tell people how to pronounce her name.
