Part of the reason any employer looks at you more than once is to see if you've graduated college. It's not fair, and it doesn't exactly make a whole lot of sense, but there's this general cultural understanding that if you can stick out the nonsense of college and graduate, you can do well in just about any job you go into. Ultimately, it isn't even about what you learn in college unless you learned a specific trade. Mostly, it's about the fact that it's "proof" that you can think in ways that show you have personal responsibility... It is a bunch of crap. Really. I don't think you should convince yourself otherwise. I think the only part about it, is don't rush to think that it's better once you're out of history class. think of it as your get out of jail free card, because working for a living, like a real living... is way worse.
As far as American history goes? I'm guessing that you live in America? That's why you've been learning it your whole life, because history in America is the only history worth talking about (or so it seems, at least to the educational system) on a very basic level. You learn more about world history in the upper level classes, but I think the introductory level history classes are mostly American history because people don't care much for history, generally speaking, and if you want some aspect of history to go in, better to beat it into their heads the history of the country that they live in. Not pretty- but true.

it's all about jumping through the hoops!! for most jobs you will EVER get in your life, you will never use 95% of what you learn. it's about the fact that you CAN learn that employers hire people. for example, an engineer, after become a P.Eng (professional engineer) can pretty much work anywhere, because they have showed they can learn new things. i know electical engineers who work for oil companies designing pipelines and well designs. he never EVER took a course in either of these, but yet he works at it. just need to be trained on how it works. i know an electrical engineer who actually works as an electrical eng, but his entire job he does is based on a single 3 credit course he took in his 4th year. doesn't have to do anything with any of the other engineering courses.
