There could be a number of reasons for it. Lets go one by one.

1.Check if you have the speakers plugged in and the light on it is on. (Possibly the stupidest answer. But who knows, maybe t might be true.)

2.Check if the pin of the speakers are inserted in the right port at the back and sometimes front of your CPU case.

3.Make sure your sound card is properly inserted in the slot of your motherboard.

4.Verify in the audio settings of your audio properties whether mute is enabled or not.

5.If all of these steps are verified and still you dont get sound, then there are only two possibilities :-

(a)The sound drivers may have been accidently removed. In this case, re-install the drivers from the CD you got with your system.
(b)Your sound card may have been damaged. Try to repair it or buy a new one.

Sometimes your sound card doesn't reactivate when the PC is rebooted. Try reinstalling your sound card driver after you've check the connection from your computer to the speakers. Also if you have speakers that use batteries (doesn't matter if it runs off AC) make sure you change those out as well. Some older types will either fade, distort or not work if the batteries or one battery is low.

Check your task bar at the bottom for your volume setting if you have it there. My crappy PC does same thing a lot and most of time its default setting is on mute ><

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
