To protect from the cold and from sun damage (the 'elements') To keep a barrier between our skin and all the nasty dirt and germs that are covering everything. We are modest and we don't want other people staring at our 'private parts' all day, or at least I don't. So many other reasons too.

Society forces the issue.Puritains think nudity is sexually offensive.I have been a nudist since I was 10 and am in my 50's now.
There are times and places that clothes are needed and should/must be worn.
So bottom line is that the founders of our society deemed that nudity was sexually offensive and that clothes would be worn.
