for software compatibility i'd say xp pro sp2. vista is still new and software development companies have not been adjusted to the new format of the windows vista operating system yet, so there are a lot of drivers as well as applications that aren't ready for vista yet.

For the time being, it is Windows XP Professional SP2.
I will think about Vista when its first service pack will be out.

Until Windows Vista is more wildly accepted and drivers and software support comes more available to the users it is not really worth it right now.

Also there will be newer hardware coming out that is more wildly accepted by Vista most hardware is but yes i myself am waiting till manufactures support it better as long as software.

So Windows XP SP2 would be suffice.

Vista is new; I'd keep away for a bit. Also, it's a 64-bit operating system. Unless you have a brand-new machine that's "vista-ready" chances are that it wouldn't be able to run Vista without screaming, if at all.

I wouldn't touch vista for at least a year... There's too many bugs in it to be reliable. Use XP Pro.....
