My guess would have to be that he's the oldest character in Looney Tune's grand arsenal of stars that he secretly outshines Bugs and Daffy because he's still around (even though his look has changed over the decades).
No wonder why he stays on the sidelines, he probably makes more money being a sidekick than he did being in the spotlight. ^_^
