I believe this was the case during the medieval times, but this far in the future and humans still killing thousands of other humans in wars?

Based on this I do not believe the human race is advancing, their choices seem very primitive to me.

I will answer you with this: somebody once said that the humans are the worst and the cruelest among all creatures of God, the only ones that kill also for pleasure, not only for hunger...all I can say is that I agree!

Because our evolution of though is not at the same as our technology.
Unfortunly rigth now many men, women and children are dying in war that the people think is agaist terrorists, but in the reality people are dying only for the oil.

There are so many reasons but the end of the day its to gain power and dominance
ie political/religious wars
psychotics etc
its just in the guise of so many different reasonings
