It is indeed difficult to be an upstanding gentleman round these parts, where young angry tracksuit/hoodie-wearing eejits are engulfing me with their particular version of de rigueur derogatory glances and gesticular incentives to henceforth blend in better. They do not speak my language however, which in no small part adds to a severe lack of understanding between both parties. The rigidity of the English (or should I say, thése English) is not so much in their stiff upper lips, I find, it's in their dogged, none too bright, foolhardy and unashamedly sub-european standards, most of all in the facets that affect them personally. These English are an odd ensemble and strangely likeable - notable exceptions among them are plausibly the finest specimens of human beings - yet their collective depressive attitude towards all things fresh..
