Car alarms with flashing lights and all are pretty effective and should send them to someone Else's' car instead of yours. Use
everything available to deter the crooks like the bar which locks the steering wheel and decals from the alarm company. Handguns are illegal for that purpose unless you have a CCW permit and your life is threatened. Most apartment complexes ban weapons of any kind. Get a tazer -- pepper sprays don't disable the bad guy and that is the goal.

I would suggest not confronting the people, especially if they seem dangerous. You should definitely use a cell to call the cops, and I would have to agree that someone stealing your car is not worth shooting them over. Installing a satellite tracking device is a good idea though and some cars already have them. Also if you have a phone with a camera or something it'd be a good idea to get a picture to ID them.

Whether it's legal or not, I don't have any moral problem with someone using force to stop a property crime (like car theft). But I do think it's unwise: why put yourself in harm's way to save a thing that's easily replacable? You've got insurance. It'll cost you a few hundred dollars and some time and stress to get a new car to replace the stolen one. It's not worth risking your life to avoid that.

It is legal to carry a handgun as long as it is not concealed. To carry a handgun and have it concealed you will need a concealed weapons permit. Also, you are allowed to use a gun to prevent a theft of your property.
But you might want to ask yourself... why should I have a car that is worth stealing when I can not afford to live in a nicer place.

Stick to the cell phone idea. just call 911. Or move next to a Doe nut shop. Then you will always have a half dozen cops close by.

A car's value doesn't exceed that of a human life. If you saw it happening, go back and let the professionals handle it. You have insurance, so if anything happened anyway, the worst that would happen is a new car. Isn't that better then worrying about the thief sending their friends back for you?

I think it would be a good idea to do neither. Instead, get a satellite tracking device, plant it in your car, and when they take off in it, you can tell the police EXACTLY where you're stolen car is or is going.

I have to say no gun because if I said yes...some people are just foolish and have no idea. Just put a silent alarm and carry a tazer maybe.

Call the police, do not confront the criminals. Better to lose your vehicle than lose you life to some drug crazed criminal.
