It depends on your diet and your body. If you have a healthy non-growing body and you eat a perfect diet that gives you all of the vitamins you need (naturally), then you probably don't need to take vitamins. If you are growing, aging, or pregnant, or have a deficency of some sort, taking vitamins are a good idea.
I know that prenatal vitamins are a necessity for pregnant moms, and are highly reccomended for women wanting to get pregnant.
Iron is a necessity for anyone who has iron-defienceny anemia-Without it, an anemic will feel fatigued all the time. Iron increases red blood cells in the blood. shutting off or not having enough of those RBC's can cause something as bad as a stroke.
On the same note, vitamins B and C help the absorption of iron into the blood stream.
Calcium supplements are necessary for anyone who doesn't get enough calcium in their diet (and many of us don't). it helps prevent brittle bone syndrome, osteoperosis, and scoliosis.
If you eat a diet rich in all of the necessary vitamins, you probably have nothing to worry about- but as most of us don't they are a good idea to take. You can't tell at first that a multivitamin is having any effect on your body- but take one for about two weeks and then quit. You will feel the effect- sluggish is the best word I can think of.
I know that people who get the gastrointestinal surgery have to take liquid vitamins while they recover from surgery because their stomach is learning how to re-digest food and they can't have all of the nutrients they need.
Because children are constantly growing and burning energy and ffood, a children's vitamin is a good- especially since they tend to not eat all of the right kinds of foods that they should. They are great for picky eaters.
Taking too many vitamins can also be harmful and even fatal. Too much iron, i know, can cause iron poisioning. Just a little bit of it can cause cramping and constipation. Too much Vitamin C can be harmful too (can't remember what the side effects are). So YES, they do something.

Yes. They do a lot more than drugs do. For instance, when I feel a cold coming on, I flood my body with vitamin c and Zinc and I feel better within 24 hours. It is like a miracle cure for the common cold.

YES!!! I took some vitamin C this afternoon because my allergies were a mess and it really helped. I'm not a vitamin fanatic though.

Yes, I do, and so do some mineral supplements. The land has been exhausted of most of it's trace elements, and the food isn't as healthy as it once was.

OF course they do. But dont just throw those HUGE pills in your mouth and expect something too happen. Just eat foods that come with them.
