The Prime Minister of India is, in practice, the most powerful person in the government of India. The Prime Minister is only technically outranked by the head of state, the President of India. But, as is typical in most parliamentary democracies, because the head of state's duties are largely ceremonial, the Prime Minister has effective responsibility for government.

The Prime Minister advises the President on all important matters like appointments judges of the High Courts and the Supreme Court, Chief Election Commissioner, Comptroller and Auditor General. He also advises the President on the summoning and proroguing of the Parliament, the dissolving of the Lok Sabha and the declaration of emergencies.

India follows a parliamentary system of government, which is modelled after that of the United Kingdom.
