We have squally heavy showers and south-westerly winds of around 40 mph down here in the south at the moment, but the forecast is for the winds to die back gradually during the day.

By late afternoon, the winds are predicted to be around 28mph

I wouldn't worry, the ferries are very robust things and they just won't sail in anything too rough. I've been across in far worse weather than we have now and, although it wasn't pleasant, it was perfectly safe.

If you're still on line Karen - the wind has died down in the south quite a lot although its still gusty.

Ginger is right, if the weather is too bad the ferry will be delayed until it is safe to make the crossing, I'm in the South and believe me when I say that there is no way the ferry would make the crossing at this moment, the trees outside my house are almost bending double. Phone the ferry company, they will put your mind at rest.

Don't worry about the crossing. The ferries are quite stable even in the roughest of weather. If it's that bad they will not leave the terminal. The only event that may happen is that it is late arriving due to the route taken to lessen the effect of the wind and tides.

It really depends on the state of the tide.
If it is leaving the North Sea into a West wind at gale force it could be a bumpy ride.
That crossing is very well monitored and overseen by the Coast Guard so don't worry.
It will add to her confidence in the future.

What you need to do is firstly check the ferry company website and secondly check the BBC Weather website. If you have SKY or Freeview then you can access it on the teletext by pressing the red button. It will also be on normal teletext on terrestrial.

Hope this helps.

You could try listening to Radio 2, they have traffic reports every hour or so including ferry crossings.

It might be worth contacting the ferry company the school as gone with.
Or contact the school as i'm sure they will be in touch with the teachers.

The worst that will happen is either a delay, or she pukes on the crossing!

There is simply no point in worrying about things where you have absolutely no control.
