My web searches have found places in Sydney & Melbourne. I've found language schools teaching English to Thais. And the local universities seem focused on European languages (French, German).

Any suggestions on learning Thai in Adelaide? As a tonal language, I'd only consider online as a last resort- not enough feedback or practice.

11mz- Before you marry a Thai, you should meet her parents. Proper manners mean you should try to speak THEIR language.
yahwhoon- I'm not ready to live in Thailand just yet. I want to know enough language when I visit.

Go to Thailand and study it. The best place I can recommend is the AUA schools. I went to AUA in Chiangmai for "one on one" lessons with a Thai teacher who could speak fluent English as well. You pay about 300 baht/hour.(AUD11) Cheaper again if you buy a block of hours. If you COULD find a good teacher in Australia you would probably pay at least $50/Hr. So if you factor in a $800 return affair to Thailand it's probably gonna cost you about the same to study in Thailand, but yeeeehhh you'll be in Thailand. Don't do the group course it's a waste of time. It's cheaper but full of backpackers who are really only interested in socialising. It will pay to book because they like to arrange the "one on one" courses when they aren't doing the group courses. It doesn't matter if you can't speak any Thai at all. My teacher's name was Jantira, she was great. Don't be surprised if at your first lesson, initially she speaks only Thai. This is part of the assessment process. If you don't know any, just speak English. AUA Language School 24 Rajadamnern Rd, Chiangmai (inside the moat) phone 0011 66 53 211973 or email. They also teach written Thai if you can stay that long. chiangmai@auathailand.com They have schools all around Thailand. website - www.auathailand.org I tried other places but this was the best. The beauty about studying Thai in Thailand is that you have plenty of people to practise on and they don't care if you stuff up. In fact most locals are quite pleased that you have bothered to learn. Good Luck. Chok dee Khrup.

Universities might seemed focused on European langauges for a reason, maybe beacuse Australia is a european based country, if you want to learn Thai go to Thailand.
