While it is often said that "those who do not know history are condemned to repeat it" there are many other positive reasons for the study of the same. Through such study, one can arrive at new discoveries in many areas. How a virus is affected by certain antibiotics, homeopathic meds, or other factors, could help in discovering alternatives in the cure of other afflictions. The propellant used in a particular engine may prove to be the most effective in a similar engine of different design. Socially, the reaction of a person to a particular statement can provide for better communication skills.Study of a particular war could be applied to a chess game, basically using the war to improve your game, much like how chess was used to improve combat strategics. If one finds that .25 grams of oregano added to spaghetti sauces gives the best taste, then repeating this could serve you well. So not only are those who do not study history condemned to repeat it--those who do not study history may be condemned not to repeat it as well! ~Thank You, Ben

It's crucial to study history to understand the mistakes we have made in the past and to reflect upon them and avoid making the same mistakes. However, of course, our current situation in the world does not prove that looking at Iraq. You see, history is very repetitive. It just repeats over and over again, just in a more destructive cycle. Also, history is what makes the foundation upon which countries were established. Such as in American politics, of course, it's crucial to understand the making of America and the unique history that shapes how things are today.

Often catchphrases such as "history repeats itself" and "we are who we were" become cliche and allow people to gloss over the importance of the study of history. History is the foundation of sociology, and has a basis in psychology as well as a large role in anthropology. These social sciences combine to form the study of who we are as people. This is not necessarily academic; everyone must contribute to society and interact with other human beings. In order to do this, especially with those from a diverse background, it is important to know what the foundation is for their preconceptions. Otherwise, you literally have no idea WHO you are interacting with.

Because by studying history we can understand why things happened in the past and what consequences there were. We can look at it and see in our modern times how there are similar problems, and we might be able to make better judgment. It allows us to put perspective into modern issues.

Ofcourse it is. History is just a giant repeating circle of death and rebirth starting with the idea of the Triple Goddess and the death and rebirth of the moon. Like the saying goes, those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Napolean neglected to look in the past and got his butt kicked in Russia in the winter.

Absolutely.

History gives us a perspective on current events, which we should all keep abreast of.

I have never much liked the way history is generally taught, however. We tend to focus too much on dates and not enough on the flow of events.

Many times there are parallels in historic events, and we should understand the relevance of those parallels in assessing current events.

And, properly presented, history is fun.
