Becuase to most Christians, the word is a badge and not a testament to their spirituality. It's a "rank and file" and not a way of life.
Most Christians today act like the merchants in the temple and less like the Prophet who threw them out. I don't think it was always that way, but it certainly is the case today.

I've been wondering the opposite - why is it that everyone seems to be judgemental of christians? Why not Jews? Moslems? Atheists? I think people try to protect themselves and their beliefs, whether that is atheistic, christian or any other religion. Our belief system is an integral part of who we are and so we will each do whatever we can to protect it because when our belief system is attacked it is like a personal attack on us, like self defense. I don't believe it should be this way though, you are right we should be practicing love and forgiveness and those who do not, though they may consider themselves christians, are not acting the way christians are supposed to (as imitators of Christ). It is important though that we also are understanding and tolerant of this no matter which side it comes from, no one is perfect, and pressure from others can bring out the worst in anyone.

Because they are bound by their rules. These rules only apply to their own cohort and non-believers do not enjoy the goodness that comes with the package. But not everyone is like that, and I believe most that do are the ones who already have personality problems and thus use christianity as an outlet. The world is made up of different types of people, and these people are also part of every religion, christianity or otherwise. A religion does not always necessarily change your inner personality, but dosent mean religion isn't good.

The ideals that christianity were built upon are far different than those practiced by the contemporary church. The church has a long standing reputation of corrupting and manipulating the bible... Perhaps if people decided to recognize the difference between the church and the religion, then we'd have far more honest christians. Although arguable this is the case for most religions...

I was part of a spiritual movement in the past and I remember acting somehow superior against other people or situations that time. Looking back now I realize it was my ego speaking, embraced in a "non-ego" shelve. I believe declaratively seeking for spirituality (and this includes religion also) can be often a refined manifestation of our ego.
Fanatic devotion is one step further; getting in "searching for truth" race and considering ourselves closer to this truth than others is egocentric also.
Why Christians? I believe is about size of the movement. The bigger it gets in followers and receiving attention, the bigger temptation to believe being closer to the ultimate truth. Acting judgmental and least forgiving is only one step further, and seems not very hard to take.

I view myself as a devout Christian, and what judgmentalism I engage in is mainly for my own protection. In other words, I practice the admonition of Paul to shun every appearance of evil--or I at least try to.
When it comes to judging others, I don't. That's up to God. I have my hands full protecting my own soul, thank you very much.
And Christ teaches us to forgive, so a devout Christian who doesn't forgive is a hypocrite.

Everyone is that way. It is human nature to be close minded to everyone around them that don't agree. I personally am Pagan and I try to be open minded but know that i sometimes jump to conclusions or don't think things through about a person. Many people that see themselves as great devot Christians are usually in this like, compitition to be the greatest and best follower of God and therefore aren't really listening to him. They are or concerned about their own image and what the world thinks of them instead of god. Out of curiosity you guys watch the wife swap recently or something.

Because they have "Righteous Indignation" on their side... I don't like hypocrisy, so I stay away from people like that. But I do have to say I have done a lot of things, and the people I have found most forgiving and least judgmental have been people that I go to church with. I know that some people think badly of me in my church, but I know I'm not there to impress anyone of them, especially the self-righteous ones!

I noticed that a bit, but something I notice even more is the so called "Atheists" who seem to preach acceptance and tolerance of all people, but then bash religious people for having beliefs they don't agree with. Im not Christian
