I have a four year old Presario 2100 and replaced the battery 18 months ago. Since then it has hardly been used, the battery is flat and will not charge despite being actually new i.e. unused.

Any ideas if I might get it working? Another battery is almost the value of the computer :-(

Turn the laptop on and run down the battery until it is dead. Take the battery out and put it in the freezer overnight. Recharge and repeat 3x. Should work now. If this doesnt fix the battery, the cells shorted out during the time it wasnt used. Then, the battery needs replacement.

I would leave it on to charge overnight and see if it does anything. Otherwise you could take it to a battery store and they can test it to see if it is dead or not. You should be able to get the battery repacked (getting new cells put inside it) this is much cheaper than a new one. Otherwise I would go and get a new computer. (there are some great reasonably priced Acer's around. Check out the Aspire 5601AWLMi i just got one and love it)
