I'd cut Lynyrd Skynyrd because I can't stand that southern-fried country rock, and add in the Rolling Stones. Queen, Pink Floyd and the Police should be up there too.
It's got to do with current popularity too. A local radio station did a contest where people voted for one of two bands every hour and Godsmack ended up beating Led Zeppelin for the final honor. I love Godsmack but they are NOT better than Zeppelin--just more visible because they make new albums constantly and come around in concert a couple of times a year.
My favorites would have to include Godsmack and Nine Inch Nails but whether either of them belong in the "greatest" category I can't say. More likely NIN than GS.

Has Gevera Bert ever listened to Saturday Night Special, Freebird, Simple Man, or That Smell? Skynyrd did a lot more than Sweet Home Alabama. Pure rock 'n' roll, man.

Skynyrd all the way!
