What was the best wrestling storyline of all time? What really changed the face of professional wrestling?

To me it's a no brainer. The NEW WORLD ORDER!!! The nWo in WCW truely changed professional wrestling. It was something brand new for it's time in 1996. Nobody ever expected a hostile takeover. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall began to take over the end of each Nitro for a couple months leading up to their WCW Bash at the Beach match against Sting, Randy Savage, and Lex Luger. The biggest shocker was HULK HOGAN turning heel (best heel turn of all time) and forming the nWo with Hall and Nash!!! It was surreal. The Giant (Big Show), Randy Savage, Scott Steiner, Buff Bagwell, Syxx-Pac (X-Pac), Curt Henning, Rick Rude, and other big names would later join. They feuded with Sting, Ric Flair, Goldberg, Bret Hart, Lex Luger, DDP, Booker T, Chris Benoit, Roddy Piper, and other WCW stars. DX in WWF was influenced by the nWo as was the WWF Attitude era. WCW was #1 creaming the WWF for 3 years.

The nWo involved the biggest heel turn of all time when Hogan turned heel and became Hollywood Hogan. It influenced and forced the WWF to make changes in order to stay alive due to the compeition with WCW and WWF would later form DX and the Attitude era with Austin all thanks to the influence of WCW/nWo storyline.

Without a doubt the Original Hogan swerve with the NWO was the greatest ever. In addition to that, some others that I would consider great are in no particular order of importance. Too hard to rate these for me.

1. Brett vs Owen. That was a great feud and Owen played a perfect heal. It was a perfect story, brother against brother one trying to step out of the others shadow. Owen was so convincing in his role that you couldn't help but to identify with him.

2. Savage vs Steamboat. Although this one doesn't go down in the ages as one of the greatest of all time storylines on most peoples list. It does for mine simply because it was such a passionate feud where everytime these guys went out they gave it everything they had and then some. Every meeting between these two was like a clash of two titans. Almost elevated the IC title to the same level as the World title.

3. Obviously without saying Hogan vs Andre. It literally was the biggest confrontation in wrestling history and remains so to this day.

4. Austin vs McMahon. It was literally what the Attitude era was built on.

5. Von Erichs vs Freedbirds Feud. Literally one of the longest running and hottest feuds ever.

6. SamoaJoe vs Angle. Although technically this storyline isn't one of the best of all time. It is certainly the best thing going in wrestling now and is the best thing since the attitude era, so I give it some praise here.

I would have to agree with you for two reasons:
First- literally over night Hogan went from the most beloved wrestler to the most hated! In order to pull something like that off in one night was pure genious!
Second- Not much really takes me by suprise, but the Curt Hennig turn on the Four Horsemen during the Cage Match PPV was not something I expecting. It was the reason the Four Horsemen finally disbanded. Outstanding writing in my opinion.

the nwo was good, but 4 me, it's sergeant slaughter turning his back on the u.s and becoming an iraqi sympathizer. he recieved death threats and everything, parlaying that into his 1st ever wwf title reign and the main event at wrestlemania 7 against hulk hogan

I would have to say Four Horse Men vs Dusty and Magnum TA in the old NWA/WCW days.

The nWo was great when it started, but it went quickly, quickly downhill. People started joining left and right and it lost all its impact.
