Try stainless steel magic. You wipe it on let it set and polish it off like car wax. If you can't find a cleaner you can acutally sand stainless steel, we've done it a few times on different appliances and fixtures. Just get a fine grit sandpaper and sand WITH the lines on the existing stainless steel.

awesome! (no not the burn) but the stuff called 'awesome' you can find at the dollar store.
read the directions, however, on my stove which is not stainless steel i use it full strength on tough burn on's and half stregnth for typical cleaning.
the cleaning spray bottle "awesome" used to sell for 7 bucks back in the 70's. for a buck it works like a million!
ps. forget the soft scrub too, it will mar the ss's service. do not scrub with anything else harsh if you dont have to.

There is an all purpose cleaner called Greased Lightning. The best place to get it is Home Depot or Lowe's. Buy it and spray on the burn mark. Let set for 3 - 8 min and then wipe of with a dry sponge. Repeat as needed.

Chances are you did not burn the steel more likely it has something burnt on it. The burnt matter is carbon and carbon hates acid. a scouring pad nylon type and a little soft scrub after soaking for a few minutes-Vinegar on a rag-rag on the mark- should take it right off.
Good luck
