We are starting to see it more and more. It is not required in resid. areas by building code in areas I'm familiar with. Most people consider it to be too expensive, but they fail to realize the amount of material needed is reduced by using metal framing. Here in southeast LA since Katrina, I've seen many new homes being constructed with it, but a lot people are in hurry, and it does typically take longer (at least in this area) to get the materials. I guess when contractors are hit with deadlines and anxious customers, people stick the ole familiar.

Everything I've managed to find on the subject indicates metal framing to more practical in the long run, so maybe it will catch on as word gets out more and more.
