I was on a team where I had the best manager in the world...she treated us like a real person and also if we messed up alittle bit on a call she was monitoring she would just listen to another one so we would get good scores.

Then that manager got promoted and I got another one that is BY THE BOOK! and I mean....really strict on everything! Treats everyone like they are just a number.

Which would you rather have, the fun cool manager that lets you get away with things or the manager that might be more strict but will help you do your job better and better prepare you for the world?

Bottom line: the best managers get the job done, regardless of style.

A strict manager may cause poor morale, or may help everyone on the team do his or her best. A cool manager may let people slack off and then the clients (and boss) get angry, or may chip in and may make the job more fun.

I want to work for someone who'll help me get better at the job, for when I'm looking to go someplace else (I'll be as good as, if not better than, the competition) or if I'm asking for a raise or promotion.

For me, I would prefer the strict manager as I would be able to learn from him/her and better myself (and get better money and even promotion later on). Nothing wrong at all with strict, provided he/she is still reasonable and not some jerk. It would be really important to me that my manager is FAIR.

The "nice" manager you mentioned really may just be easy on staff to give herself less work. It is a lot more work to constantly coach people!!!

I found that I always knew where I stood with a boss that played it by the book, but I liked the friendship of the other kind also.
