I saw an episode of mythbusters where they were experimenting on why it went up in flames so fast, but my question is why was it in the US in the first place?? I noticed from pictures that there were Swastikas on the back of it which means it was here during or pre WW II....

It was a commercial transatlantic flight. The Swastika flag had been German's co-national flag since Hitler came to power in 1933, her only national flag since 1935. In 1937 America and Germany were at peace (the year before a lot of Americans had been to the Olympic Games in Berlin). On September 5, 1`939, after Germany had invaded Poland, the United States even proclaimed their neutrality. As a matter of fact, Germany and the U.S were only at war after Germany declared war on the Uniter5d States on 11 December 1941 (triggered by America's declaration of War on Japan three days earlier).

The explosion of the Hindenburg happened in Lakehurst NJ in 1937. That was before the US decared war on Germany. okgogeo is right. It was a standard transatlantic flight.

BTW The tower on top of the Empire State Building was originally meant to be a mooring mast for dirigibles, but there sas no safe way for the passengers to get out.

America did not raise propaganda against the Swastika until the declaration of war. If you watch or read about the Nazi's, they even had their own factions with the Swastika in the US with MANY followers before the war. Even after the war, and today, you will see the emblem and wannabe followers of the cult group that became a POWERFUL government.

It was a 1937 flight. TransAtlantic flights with derigibles were quite common back then.
