In the state of California, if you are a minor of the age of 17, you cannot possess a pistol or revolver or other weapon capable of being concealed upon the person, UNLESS you have prior written consent of your parent or guardian, and you are actively engaged in, or are in direct transit to or from a lawful recreational sport, including such as ....competitive shooting, agricultural, ranching, or hunting activity, (or in motion picutres television , video production, entertainment or theatrical event, , etc.). The same is true of ammunition.

The minor violating this statute can get a misdemeanor offense if it is a first offense, or prison or county jail time if it is a repeat offense.

If you have any question, you should get the opinion of an attorney before doing anything.

Oh, and if you live in San Francisco.....good luck. You can forget possessing a gun under any circumstances, as they have local ordinances against it. You will not get a permit no matter what your age. Nor can you have a gun registered or sold to you under 18.

most states do allow for the use of a firearm under supervision for minors as young as 15 in the field( hunting) or younger in controlled enviornments( rifle ranges). you can not register a firearm if you are under 18, and may not have a handgun if you are under 21. If you are caught with the firearm then the penalty will depend on many factors.

what state you live in.
was it concealed.
were where you when you where caught.
was it loaded.
was it a handgun.

for instance if you where caught with a handgun in a government building such as a school in the state of RI and it was loaded and concealed you could face up to 4 to 7 years in prison. 1 to 3 for carrying a concealed firearm, 1 to 2 for carring a firearm into a school, and up to 2 years for carring a handgun by a monor. then again in the state of RI there is a special court just for firearm crimes called, ready for this, "gun court" pretty original isn't it.
