NO. Do not attempt it. Do not build a converter cable. They are different protocols and physical interfaces. Unfortunately, with the variations in connectors for DV (which uses firewire) and the minor variations of USB cables for size, it could seem like there must be a cable that connects the two. And, well, there is; but read the warnings below.

To connect your DV player to your computer you will need an aftermarket card that has the port, if your computer doesn't already have it in the back. Some machines have them, but it is not on all machines. The computer case version will be a connector about 1cm in length that has a bullet profile, not the square USB profile. DV players usually use a much smaller 5mm square crown profile connector that is similar to the small 5mm square-ish USB connector, but they will not interconnect. And don't force it. ;-)

You can purchase the firewire card for about $20. It will plug into a PCI slot in your machine. Then you will need a firewire large connector to firewire 5mm connector cable. Then you are done. Ready to do some heavy duty video editing.

You can purchase a converter cable, that goes from USB to 4-pin firewire, but this will only work if your USB is 2.0 and conforms to the new spec for higher bandwidth. This may not give you desirable results on your video transfers either. You will have to check bandwidth capabilities of your USB if you go this route.

There are two types of Digital hook ups one is a fire-wire that looks very close to a usb but is not one end is slightly rounded. With Mac there is one size now. And for windows there are two the old Mac style which is bigger but will not plug into a USB port then the small plug that is a 1/4 inch wide by 1/16th of an inch thick. Most digital equipment comes with it's own cable for the equipment itself and then one to connect to a computer. Some digital cameras connect to a USB hub. most DV devices will be firewire IEEE1394 but there could be an exception to this. for Dv you need a high transfer rate and that only comes from the fire-wire, it has the fastest rated transfer speed for a PC that I know of.

No. A USB cable goes into the USB port on a PC. You are probably looking at a Firewire cable.

Definitely not, unless you have a converter. A cable that plugs into usb with an end that you can plug the 6 pin in.

Hope that helps.

no, usb is always 4 pins. sounds like you are thinking of firewire, which can use 6 pins and usually goes to digital video cameras.
