Go to System Configuration Utility.
Start
Run
Type in... msconfig
Click ..OK..Button
General tab
check... selective startup
then.. choose the startup tab
UNcheck anything you dont want to startup with your computer.
Apply and OK
You will need to restart computer for these changes to take affect.
NOTE... You can delete anything here you don't want to startup with your computer. This will NOT stop your computer from running nor harm it in any way. These are just programs that you want to open when you start your computer. You can still open then manually with icons in program files. You Should allow your antivirus to open with the computer. But you can make changes anytime.
Or you can delete everything reboot and then add things you need.
I have been doing this process for many years. Each time something I downloaded is added to start up I just go in and Uncheck it. Some programs need to be changed within the program itself. Such as Windows updates.

All above guys are correct,
In addition , many programs that run at startup also have a tray icon in windows and nearly all of them provide a so called options, settings or preferences that provide you the setting to enable or disable at windows startup.
Please not that if the programs are running and you use msconfig to disable those at startup it is possible that the program saves it's settings again before exiting.
If you face a really annoying program that can not be disabled this way, you may want to boot in safe mode first before applying configurations with msconfig utility

Like the last post type MSCONFIG (unless your running Windows 2000) at the run command from the start menu. Also look in start-programs-startup and delete anything you don't want in there. If all else fails you can edit the registry but this gets a little tricky for the novice so I don't recommend it.

Right click while pointing your mouse on start, a list will come up and you will want to choose properties Click customize then the remove button and this will show which programs you have running at startup. Just remove the ones you don't want

Start->run
type in msconfig and than hit ok
click the startup tab
These are all the programs that startup when your computer is booted up...just unclick anything that you do not want to start at startup
