A couple of reason, I think.

First, it's not normally considered PI because white men are perceived as the most powerful subgroup; also, the belittling appeals a bit to everyone else.

Re commercials, they are likely to be the least motivated / influenced shoppers.

Even in the beer and football world, there is often at least one "loser" guy...

As someone in advertising, this is one of my pet peeves.

You'll see that in spots aimed at women. Supposedly it makes them feel good about themselves to see the man as you descibed.

I always say if someone made a spot like that about a woman, no one would ever show it.
