Here's the history of both words
CAR = from 'carriage' which use to be horse drawn in the old days. car body builders in italy are still called carrozzeri or 'coach builders' because that's what they did for a living 100 years ago.
AUTOMOBILE = AUTOMATIC + MOBILE, which means it is something that Moves on its own. Automobile ca refer to anything that fits this description (trains, trucks, etc) but is generally used with reference to cars.

Automobile is the formal name for a car. Car is the informal word meaning the same. A short term for automobile is car. I do not know the origin of the word car. Also used is the word 'Auto'.

As you can see by the dictonary defination of a "CAR" it can mean many things, besides automobile.
A car is:

Because the cars run with the self, i mean nobody is pushing or pulling... so its auto which in Latin means self. and mobile is the term to mean something like portable... so put urself the words together!

It is an auto, it is mobile in that it moves...therefore it is an automobile.
