I'm going to a benefit dinner and am going to wear my black suit, with my new dress shirt- it has very thin light and dark blue stripes- but was hoping to match it with my date's red dress. Can I wear a red and blue patterned tie with a striped shirt? Any other ideas on how to tie this all together?

Basic rules:
As a general rule, you can wear a striped shirt with a striped tie as long as the stripes aren't identical in size.
Make sure at least one color in your tie matches either your suit, shirt, or your belt and shoes.
Avoid wearing a striped shirt with a striped tie and a pinstriped suit. Matching three similar patterns together is rarely a winning combination.

I also like the suggestion of a plain red tie.

With the color of the suit and the details on your shirt, I would wear a plain red tie ( one which matches your dates red dress ). Besides it is the inthing these days and i have seen it all over as I travel a lot.

In this situation I would use the tie in the link below, it have red to match the dress, blue for the shirt and black for a dignified look with your suit.
Just shorten the link back to .com and it should take you to the website.

I would wear just a dark blue tie. Red on your tie might make you look mismatched. Maybe get a red flower to wear in your suit pocket. Maybe she could change her dress to match yours. Girls usually have more of a variety.

Yes, as long as the blue is the same shade as your shirt.

As long as the tie doesn't have stripes, you should be okay. Stripes on stripes are too "busy."
